We strongly recommend Belize travel insurance for a Magenta stay. Much of a stay is paid for before you travel, and several protections have short purchase windows, so buy soon after your first deposit. This guide explains how to choose coverage for a villa stay or a whole-island booking.

Key takeaways

  • Buy soon after your first trip deposit, because Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) and pre-existing condition waivers typically have purchase windows of 14 to 21 days.
  • CFAR lets you cancel for a reason a standard plan does not accept, and the highest reimbursement Squaremouth lists is 75%.
  • Four plans listed by Squaremouth have per-person limits from $30,000 to $100,000, so a host paying for a whole group should ask the insurer how it treats one payer.
  • Magenta is not an insurance agent, so confirm coverage, limits and deadlines with the provider.

Belize Caribbean private island resort

Why a private island stay calls for a closer look

A private island stay is often planned around a milestone date, with many travelers on one reservation. Most guests fly into Belize City (BZE), take a short domestic flight to Placencia (PLJ), then board our yacht for the crossing of about six miles. Most travel delay benefits start paying after a delay of 3 to 12 hours, so check that figure when you compare plans.

Medical evacuation in Belize is worth planning for before you travel. For Belize trips, Squaremouth recommends at least $100,000 of Medical Evacuation coverage and at least $50,000 in Emergency Medical coverage. For a cruise or travel to a remote location, Squaremouth generally recommends $250,000, so ask the provider which figure applies to an island stay.

Our Reservation Guidelines & Policies page says, “We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance at the time of booking.”

Is Belize travel insurance worth it? Pros and cons

Reasons to buy

  • Trip cancellation can reimburse your prepaid costs when a covered reason stops the trip.
  • Medical evacuation covers transport to the nearest adequate facility, or home, after a serious illness or injury.
  • Trip interruption can reimburse unused prepaid costs if a covered reason cuts your trip short.
  • CFAR gives you an option, with conditions, when your reason is not on a plan’s covered list.

Trade-offs to weigh

  • Squaremouth says to expect 4% to 10% of your total trip expenses for a comprehensive policy, and a plan with CFAR costs roughly 40 to 50% more than a typical comprehensive plan.
  • CFAR has conditions: the highest reimbursement Squaremouth lists is 75%, you must insure 100% of your prepaid, non-refundable expenses, and most plans require you to cancel 48 to 72 hours ahead.
  • Purchase windows are short: CFAR and pre-existing condition waivers typically require you to buy within 14 to 21 days of your first trip deposit, and a waiver requires you to be medically stable at purchase.
  • Per-person limits and covered-reason lists mark the edges of what a plan pays.

Does your credit card already cover this?

Ask your card issuer what it covers for medical evacuation and up to what amount, and ask your health plan whether it covers care outside the United States.

When going without is reasonable

A policy adds the least when your schedule is flexible, you could absorb the cost of a canceled trip, and your medical and evacuation coverage is already in place. Some travelers in that position choose to self-insure.

What each type of travel insurance covers

These are the pieces of Belize travel insurance to compare. The first six rows are benefits a plan can include or add, and the last three are separate products.

Coverage What it does What to check
Trip cancellation Can reimburse up to 100% of non-refundable, prepaid trip costs if you cancel for a covered reason, such as illness, injury, death or severe weather. The list of covered reasons in your plan certificate.
Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) An optional add-on that reimburses 50 to 75% of insured expenses if you cancel for a reason Trip Cancellation does not cover. The highest reimbursement Squaremouth lists is 75%. It is typically bought within 14 to 21 days of your first trip deposit, and most plans require you to cancel 48 to 72 hours before departure.
Trip interruption Covers you if you start your trip late or end it early for a covered reason, and can reimburse unused prepaid costs and additional return travel charges. The covered reasons and the per-person limit.
Travel delay Reimburses meals, hotel stays and other necessary expenses if you are significantly delayed. Most policies start after a delay of 3 to 12 hours.
Emergency medical Covers emergency medical treatment while you are traveling. Squaremouth recommends at least $50,000 for Belize trips. Ask your health plan whether it covers care abroad.
Medical evacuation Covers the cost to move you to the nearest adequate medical facility, or back to your home country, after a serious injury or illness. Applies when transport is medically necessary. Squaremouth recommends at least $100,000 for Belize trips, and generally $250,000 for a cruise or a remote location. Ask the provider which applies.
Medical transport membership A membership, not insurance, that arranges medical transport for members. Medjet is one example. The conditions for transport, the membership type, the fee and the current terms.
Event cancellation A separate product for a private or business event you host, such as a wedding or an anniversary party. Whether your destination is covered, the event types and when you must buy.
Group policy One policy for a group of travelers. Squaremouth lists 8 or more travelers, the same destinations, similar travel dates and US residency. Ask the provider for its own minimum number of travelers.

Does travel insurance cover hurricanes in Belize?

For hurricane travel insurance, timing matters. Squaremouth says you typically must buy at least 24 hours before the storm is named, forecast or upgraded to hurricane status, though exact requirements depend on the policy and provider. A named hurricane does not automatically trigger coverage, because each policy has its own list of covered reasons.

Our low season, May through October, brings mostly short afternoon showers and overlaps the Atlantic hurricane season. Our guide to the best time to visit Belize covers the months in detail.

How to insure a villa or suite stay

If you have bought travel insurance for a private villa rental before, the steps here will be familiar. Buy soon after your first deposit so you are inside any purchase window for CFAR or a pre-existing condition waiver. CFAR requires you to insure 100% of your prepaid, non-refundable expenses, so list them before you shop.

Then compare each plan’s per-person limit with your own share of the trip cost, whether you choose a Grand Villa or a Sanctuary Suite. You can see each villa and suite before you decide.

How to insure a whole-island booking

If one host pays for a whole-island booking of up to 22 guests, the first number to check is a plan’s per-person trip cost limit. The four plans in the table below, as listed by Squaremouth, have limits from $30,000 to $100,000. Our private island buyout guide covers the booking itself.

If the amount you need to insure is higher than a plan’s per-person limit, call the insurer or a licensed agent before you buy.

Group travel insurance is another route to ask about. Squaremouth describes it as one policy for 8 or more travelers. It notes that groups of 8 or more can instead buy individual plans for each person, and that when more than 10 travelers want one plan, a group policy is typically the best and only option.

Questions to ask your insurer

  1. How does the plan treat one person who pays the trip costs for many travelers?
  2. Can each traveler be listed with a share of the cost, and does the limit apply per share?
  3. Who needs to be insured: the host, each guest, or both?
  4. How long after the first deposit can CFAR be added, and what share does it reimburse?
  5. If a group policy fits, what is the provider’s minimum number of travelers?

Event cancellation insurance for a destination wedding, milestone celebration or corporate retreat

Trip insurance protects what each traveler has paid for. Event cancellation insurance is a separate product for an event you host, so it is worth asking about both.

Markel, for example, offers event cancellation for private events such as weddings, anniversary parties, birthday parties and retirement parties. Its page says business and corporate events must have fewer than 500 attendees and are subject to underwriting approval. Ask Markel whether your destination is covered before you buy, and ask your own insurance broker which event insurers cover events at your destination.

Markel says event cancellation can be purchased up to 14 days before the event date, and that to cover extreme weather or acts of nature, the policy must be purchased at least 15 days before that weather is anticipated or occurs. It also suggests buying as soon as you begin to pay deposits.

For a celebration here, see our guide to a Belize private island wedding or elopement. For a corporate retreat, start with your company’s commercial insurance broker, and see our corporate retreat guide.

Where to start looking for a plan

Two comparison sites show plans from many insurers side by side. Squaremouth lets you quote, compare and purchase travel insurance. InsureMyTrip, founded in 2000, says it was the world’s first major travel insurance comparison site and has a fully licensed customer care team.

The four plans below are places to start, not recommendations or rankings. Figures are as listed by Squaremouth on September 30, 2026, on its Cancel For Any Reason and luxury travel insurance pages, and they can change.

Plan Trip cost limit per person Cancel For Any Reason CFAR purchase window
AXA Assistance USA Explorer Elite $50,000 Available upgrade, up to 75%; confirm with the provider Confirm with the provider
Seven Corners Trip Protection Basic $50,000 75% (available upgrade) Within 20 days of first trip deposit
Tin Leg Gold $30,000 75% (available upgrade) Within 14 days of first trip deposit
Travel Insured International FlexiPAX $100,000 75% (available upgrade) Within 21 days of first trip deposit

Where to start for medical transport

Medjet says it is a membership, not insurance. Medjet says that if you are hospitalized more than 150 miles from home, it arranges air medical transport to a hospital of your choice in your home country, regardless of medical necessity, and pays 100% of the transport costs. It offers short-term and annual memberships, so check the current terms and fee with Medjet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need travel insurance for a private island stay in Belize?

We strongly recommend it. Our Reservation Guidelines and Policies page advises purchasing comprehensive travel insurance at the time of booking, with medical evacuation coverage included. A policy can protect your prepaid costs and cover medical care while you travel.

When should I buy travel insurance for my stay?

Buy soon after your first trip deposit. Squaremouth says Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) typically has to be purchased within 14 to 21 days of your first trip deposit, and a pre-existing condition waiver usually requires a purchase in the same range. Deadlines depend on the plan, so confirm them with the provider.

What is Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) coverage?

Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) is an optional add-on that reimburses 50 to 75% of your insured travel expenses if you cancel for a reason the Trip Cancellation benefit in your plan does not cover. The highest reimbursement Squaremouth lists is 75%, and you must insure 100% of your prepaid, non-refundable trip expenses. Most plans require you to cancel 48 to 72 hours before departure.

How do I insure a whole-island booking paid by one person?

Start by asking the insurer how it treats one payer covering many travelers. Four plans listed by Squaremouth (Travel Insured International FlexiPAX, Seven Corners Trip Protection Basic, AXA Assistance USA Explorer Elite and Tin Leg Gold) have per-person trip cost limits from $30,000 to $100,000. If your amount is higher, call the insurer or a licensed agent before you buy, and ask whether a group policy fits and what its minimum number of travelers is.

Does travel insurance cover hurricanes in Belize?

It can, but a named hurricane does not automatically trigger coverage. Each policy has a specific list of covered reasons, and severe weather is one reason Squaremouth lists for trip cancellation. You typically must buy at least 24 hours before the storm is named, forecast or upgraded to hurricane status, and exact requirements depend on the policy and provider.

Do I need medical evacuation coverage for Belize?

We strongly recommend travel insurance that includes medical evacuation coverage, as our Reservation Guidelines and Policies page states. For Belize trips, Squaremouth recommends at least $100,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage and at least $50,000 in Emergency Medical coverage. For a cruise or a remote location, it generally recommends $250,000 of evacuation coverage. Evacuation benefits apply when transport is medically necessary and typically go to the nearest adequate facility, while memberships such as Medjet are separate products. Ask the provider which limit applies to an island stay.

Is trip insurance the same as event or wedding cancellation insurance?

No. Trip insurance can reimburse the prepaid trip costs of each traveler for covered reasons, while event cancellation insurance is a separate product for a private or business event you host. Markel, for example, covers private events such as weddings and anniversary parties, and says business and corporate events must have fewer than 500 attendees and are subject to underwriting approval. Ask Markel whether your destination is covered before you buy.

Does Magenta sell or recommend travel insurance?

We strongly recommend that guests purchase comprehensive travel insurance at the time of booking. Magenta is not an insurance agent and does not sell or endorse any policy. Comparison sites such as Squaremouth and InsureMyTrip are places to start, and plan details change. Please confirm coverage, limits and deadlines with the provider before you buy.
